The scaffold protein A-kinase anchor protein 12 (AKAP12) exerts tumor suppressor activity and is downregulated in several tumor entities. We characterized AKAP12 expression and regulation in astrocytomas, including pilocytic and diffusely infiltrating astrocytomas. We examined 194 human gliomas and 23 normal brain white matter samples by immunohistochemistry or immunoblotting for AKAP12 expression. Different immunohistochemical levels of Hsp60 and Hsp70 in a subset of brain tumors and putative role of Hsp60 in neuroepithelial tumorigenesis

In this work we analysed, by immunohistochemistry, a series of brain tumors to detect the levels and cellular distribution of Hsp60 and Hsp70. We found that Hsp60 levels were significantly higher than those of Hsp70 in neuroepithelial tumors, while levels of both molecules were not significantly different from each other in meningeal neoplasms. In particular, Hsp60 immunopositivity was present mainly at the cytoplasmic level, while Hsp70 immunopositivity was found both in the cytoplasm and in the nucleus of tumor cells. Accurate classification of childhood brain tumours by in vivo H-1 MRS - A multi-centre study

Aims: To evaluate the accuracy of single-voxel Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-MRS) as a non-invasive diagnostic aid for pediatric brain tumours in a multi-national study. Our hypotheses are (1) that automated classification based on 1H-MRS provides an accurate non-invasive diagnosis in multi-centre datasets and (2) using a protocol which increases the metabolite information improves the diagnostic accuracy. Background Children diagnosed with LGG at an age <1 year are reported to have an impaired prognosis in comparison to older patients. Analysis of this subgroup could reveal the necessity to develop risk-adapted treatment approaches. Pediatric High-Grade Astrocytomas Show Chromosomal Imbalances Distinct from Adult Cases

We studied 23 pediatric high-grade astrocytomas by comparative genomic hybridization. Chromosomal imbalances were found in 10 of 10 anaplastic astrocytomas and 11 of 13 glioblastomas and consisted of +1q (43%), +3q (26%), +1p, +2q, +5q (22%), −22q (34%), −6q, −10q (30%), −9q, −11q, −13q, −16q, and −17p (22%). Gliofibromas (including malignant forms), and gliosarcomas: a comparative study and review of the literature

The presence of connective tissue elements in gliomas necessitates in every case a thorough analysis of the character and derivation of such elements to allow the formulation of an appropriate diagnosis. Four cases are presented in this paper. The role of computed tomography in the diagnosis of brain tumors in infants and children.

CT has considerably facilitated the diagnosis of intracranial tumors, especially in infants and children. The authors review their experience with a series of 260 children with proven brain tumors. In most cases CT is so conclusive that other diagnostic techniques are no longer often needed.
